DHS WEEK 5.3

3/2/2020

It is the last week before progress reports, so be sure to check your student’s objective sheet. Members of Symphonic Band have modified their objectives and are using a sticker progress chart in class instead. Concert Band and Wind Ensemble should have the first three objectives completed by the end of the week. In addition, we have our first guest clinician coming in on Friday!

Extra Credit Opportunities this Week
There are two extra credit opportunities this week. The first is the SMS Pre UIL Concert on Monday at the SMS Auditorium. It will start at 6 pm, and end at approximately 7:45 pm. The second extra credit opportunity is the DISD Percussion Concert on Thursday at the DHS Auditorium. The concert will start at 7 pm.

If you decide to attend, please bring a copy of the program in order to receive your extra credit!

Spring Trip
The spring trip to Tennessee is quickly approaching! Please make sure that you have made all payments by this point to Educational Travel Adventures.

We will create a concert ensemble to perform as part of this trip. This ensemble will have one required rehearsal on THIS UPCOMING Friday, March 6th from 4-6 pm. Music will be given to students at this rehearsal. We will perform the two pieces that we already learned at the Side by Side Concert earlier in the semester, as well as one other piece. We will also have a required student and parent meeting on Friday, March 6th at 6 pm. We will go over the final itinerary, suggested packing list, behavior expectations, etc.

A few people have asked what the call time will be for this trip. A final itinerary will be sent out in a separate email today.

Updated Pre UIL Concert
Due to STAAR testing, I have had to move our Pre UIL concert to the previous week. Our new Pre UIL date will be on Tuesday, March 31st. This is a required event for Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble members only. A more detailed itinerary will be sent out closer to the event.

It is vital for our success at our UIL Concert & Sight Reading Contest later in April that ALL students in Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble be at Pre UIL, so that we can get an accurate read from our judges. Please check your athletic calendars now, and make plansahead of time with your coach so that you will be at the entire Pre UIL event.

Optional Trip to WGI  Denton
Each year, Mrs. Creech takes a group of students to watch the WGI Competition in Denton. This is a great opportunity for students in varsity and JV color guard to see performances at the highest levels of performance!

Thank you so much to all of the parent volunteers that assisted with our first ever Pasta Dinner Fundraiser!  We made over $2,000 in profit from the event!

As we begin the 5th Six Weeks, please continue to help us keep an eye on student grades to ensure academic success.  All students will receive a new Objective Sheet in class on Tuesday.  Wind Symphony students will receive a separate email with details and instructions on how to complete objectives in this marking period.

Finances
The SMS Band Booster Club currently has $7,503.15 in past due finances.  Please check Charms to make sure all finances are up to date.  Payment may be made in the Band Office via cash or check made out to Touch of Gold, or online through Charms via credit or debit card.  All fees should be paid at this point except for trips and March Private Lessons (Due March 1st) forward.  Financial Statements have been emailed.

Fan Cloth Fundraiser
We have extended the deadline for Fan Cloth orders to Friday, February 21st in an effort to sell more items!  We have a goal of selling 2,000 items program wide.  Please go check out the online store and pick out some attire to help support the band program!  Orders can be placed at fancloth.shop/guvbum (if you type in ‘www’ the URL will not work).

  •                  The Entire Fundraiser is ONLINE – Students will not need to turn in an Order Form or collect payment!  Students simply need to encourage people to check out their brochure and visit the online store at fancloth.shop/guvbm
  •                  Customers must select the name of the student (or if it is the first item being purchased for a student, enter the first and last name) they would like to receive credit when checking out.
  •                  Students will receive $5 per item sold as credit in their Charms Miscellaneous Ledger at the conclusion of the fundraiser.  Profit may be used toward any band expense that is paid through Charms.  Profit transfers from one school year to the next and from one campus to the next, within Denison ISD, as long as students are enrolled in the Band Program.
  •                  Size charts are available on the online store.
  •                  Products will be delivered after Spring Break to the student they were purchased from, and then it is that student’s responsibility to deliver them to the customer.

SMS Band Pictures – Wednesday, February 19th at 9:00 AM.
Students must wear their Concert Black Attire and meet in the SMS Band Hall for 2nd Period.  We will take group pictures and individual pictures of every student for a composite.  Students may wear their Concert Black Attire to school (unless they have Athletics 1st Period) and will have an opportunity to change into school clothes after pictures are completed, so please bring a change of clothes.  Students that have Athletics 1st Period need to be prepared to change into Concert Black Attire as soon as Athletics is over.  Students participating in Special Olympics will be released when pictures are completed.  We plan to finish taking pictures by 3rd Period.

All students must participate in taking pictures, however, purchasing pictures is optional.

Students received a Picture Order Form today in class.  Please complete the Picture Order Form and send it back with payment on the day of pictures to place an order.  Please note that payment must be via cash or check made out to Micahel’s.  All Picture Order Forms will be delivered directly to representatives from Michael’s and should not be turned in to a Band Director or in the Band Office.  Please do not turn in Picture Order Forms ahead of time.

Directors at TMEA – Wednesday (12th), Thursday (13th), and Friday (14th)
All Band Directors will be gone to the TMEA Convention this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  There will not be any Sectionals or Private Lessons on these days (Mr. Gurke willcommunicate directly with students and parents if there are Percussion Sectionals).  The Band Hall will open at its normal time on Wednesday, but it will not be opened until 7:00 AM by Mr. Gurke on Thursday and Friday, so please plan accordingly.  Students will play every day in class, so they need to have their instrument and materials.  The Band Hall will be closed every day after school, so please plan on picking up your student at their appropriate grade level drop off location.  Students will not have access to the Band Hall after school and students are not allowed to get picked up from the Band Hall parking lot when the Band Hall is closed.

Fan Cloth Fundraiser
Fan Cloth is our Spring Fundraiser selling Denison attire.  The Entire Fundraiser is ONLINE – Students will not need to turn in an Order Form or collect payment!  Students simply need to encourage people to check out their brochure and visit the online store at fancloth.shop/guvbm.  Customers must select the name of the student (or if it is the first item being purchased for a student, enter the first and last name) they would like to receive credit when checking out.  Students will receive $5 per item sold as credit in their Charms Miscellaneous Ledger at the conclusion of the fundraiser.  Profit may be used toward any band expense that is paid through Charms.  Profit transfers from one school year to the next and from one campus to the next, within Denison ISD, as long as students are enrolled in the Band Program.  Size charts are available on the online store.  Products will be delivered after Spring Break to the student they were purchased from, and then it is that student’s responsibility to deliver them to the customer.  The fundraiser ends on Tuesday, February 18th.  Please go check out the online store and pick out some attire to help support your favorite local band program!

DHS week 4.5

2/3/2020

Hello,

We are nearing the end of the six weeks. Parents should look at their students’ objective sheets. Each band class has weekly objectives that students should pass off either during sectionals, class, or via Schoology. In addition, each student has been preparing a solo. Students will either perform their solo at the UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest (if they signed up) or in class next week.

In addition, the band calendars that were ordered as part of the Spirit Wear Sale are in! I will hand these out in class on Monday. In addition, I have about 15 extra calendars. If you are interested in purchasing one, please send your student with either cash or check made out to TOG Band.
